For the past three weeks I have been playing around with Emacs. Right from learning how to do simple editing to finally getting the Java Development Environment for Emacs (JDEE) setup on my machine, its been a whirlwind tour of this awesome editor!
I used to be a big "vi" fan, but the sheer amount of work that Emacs allows you to accomplish is simply superb! I'm looking at a phase of experimentation, to see if Emacs will be productive for me on a daily basis. For now, the answer seems yes!

Have you found any good resources for learning all the programmer-oriented tricks around EMACS? Or specific to JDEE would be good too. It seems that most of the stuff out there just gets you the basics of text editing.
I do really like the power of emacs. Too bad you usually don't find it installed by default out in the wild. So I keep having to keep my vi skills sharp.

Your best bet for learning to edit well with Emacs is the book I mentioned. Chapters 2, 3, 4 & 9 are what you are looking for.

I agree, that getting Emacs setup just the way you like it is not so easy! :) But once done, you will not want to leave it. I may be using 10% of what JDE and Emacs has to offer, but its more than enough for me.
I think another must have plugin for Emacs is the "Emacs Code Browser (ECB)".
